The Great Whites are in 'Shark Alley' all year round, but the best viewing months for clear water are from April to September, the sharks are also particularly active in their feeding patterns during this period.
April – September (winter)
Shark activity is high at Dyer Island due the abundant availability of food supply from the Cape Fur Seal colonies.
During this time 4 or 5 sharks are usually encountered in a day, but as many as 18 have been seen. Weather conditions are unpredictable and trips might be cancelled due to high seas. Allow for more than 1 day to view.
October – March (summer)
Shark activity is lower at Dyer Island and much higher at the beach where the sharks are hunting for game fish. Water temperatures are much colder than in winter (water temperatures are influenced by currents and weather systems) and visibility can be limited. Allow for more than 1 day to view.
Even though you still have a good chance of seeing the sharks during the other months, their feeding patterns are more inconsistent and may therefore differ from day to day.
WEATHER AND WATER CONDITIONS
The water temperature ranges from 12C - 16C during winter months (May - August) and 8C - 10C during summer months (September - April). Visibility is usually 6-8 meters, but can go up to 12 -16 meters on a good day and down to 1-3 meters on a bad day.
The best time of year for shark cage diving is during the wintermonths.
