Blue Shark (Prionace glauca)

The blue shark, is a carcharhinid shark which is found in the deep waters of the world's temperate and tropical oceans. They prefer cooler waters.

Blue sharks are known to migrate long distances. Although generally lethargic, they are capable of moving very quickly if the need arises.

They feed primarily on small fish and squid, although they are perfectly capable of taking larger prey should the opportunity present itself. Also, they may pose considerable danger to humans if they are encountered in large groups.

They are often found in schools segregated by sex and size, and this behavior has led to their being nicknamed the "wolves of the sea". They are also the second fastest sharks, next to the mako shark.

Size – average size for male blue sharks are 2.4m and average for a female blue shark is 2.8m

Characteristics – Blue sharks have bright blue colouration on the body, with a white belly.  They have long pectoral fins on the sides of their body to streamline their movements.

Diet - schools of fish including anchovies, sardines, herring and squid

Reproduction – females gives birth to 20 – 25 pups

Risk to humans:  Blue sharks are not considered dangerous to humans

Where can they be found? Blue sharks are pelagic; they are found in open waters. Like most pelagic sharks, they are found worldwide.
