Gansbaai is the White Shark capital of the world
A traditional fishing village, 1 ½ hours drive from Cape Town.
Greater Gansbaai consists of De Kelders whith a number of caves and cliffs that offers ideal viewpoints for whale watching and hiking. The majority of the shark and whale watching boats launch at Kleinbaai Harbour. The Dangerpoint Lighthouse is close to Kleinbaai. Franskraal of and Pearly Beach offers lovely beaches for swimming. A visit to Baardskeerdersbos will give you an ideal place for viewing the beautiful Fynbos with a number of hiking trails in the surrounding area.
Gansbaai boasts with the Marine Big 5 – seals, penguins, sharks, dolphins and whales.
In spring and winter, Southern Right Whales come into Walker Bay to calve and can be seen from the shore in Gansbaai.
The harbour at Gansbaai is in a sheltered bay with the town nestling at the foot of Duyenefontein Mountains. Gansbaai boasts a beautiful coastline with magnificent “Fynbos” vegetation of which there are 164 species. Shark-diving boats and whale-watching boats leave from the harbour of Gansbaai or Kleinbaai onwards to the Dyer Island-Group, home to thousands of Cape Fur Seals and African Penguins and numerous other birds.
Directions to Gansbaai:
Take the N2 from Cape Town and continue over Sir Lowry´s Pass. Take the R43/ Hermanus turnoff and follow the road to Hermanus. Follow the Stanford, Gansbaai signs to Stanford and then continue for another 20 km to Gansbaai. View Map
From Port Elizabeth / George take the N2 to Cape Town. 10 km outside Riversonderend turn left towards Hermanus. After 50km, at the T-junction at Stanford turn left and continue 20km to Gansbaai.
